Sometimes we need to think of the ‘Game of Work” that we play everyday differently. At Boss we liken this to a Rugby Game & how does one prepare the players & then have the players execute the game plan..........
Let me paint a picture of the Game for you & how we may be able to relate this back to our ‘Game of Work”
During my conversation with the players I was encouraged by the majority of positive energy they were displaying. They have certainly come along way. As I have explained to them that the progress I see is we have moved from the goal line to the 25 metre mark & then to the half way line. We are steadily making our way toward the 75 metre line. Now I want you to think of what obstacle are holding you back from reaching the 75 metre line. Think who the opposition may be? Now line the opposition up with the team wanting to move forward & then instantly there are no obstacles in their way, they reach the try line & don’t even stop at the 75 metre mark.
Sometimes we can be very judgemental on people & express our judgements through emotion. Totally disregarding the process for analysis & constructing the solution to the matter at hand. Without realising what we have done we have sent some of our players spiralling backward toward their own line. The coach having deviated from the game plan now must work harder to move the players toward the goal line.
Also think of what happens to your players when they are pushed backward toward their own line. The players having lost some more of their energy start to consider whether the game & all of it’s defensive hits are worth taking. Safety becomes paramount. They no longer see it as “A Game Worth Playing”.
The coach then begins to consider using the reserves. The reserves have been sitting on the bench week in & week out waiting for their opportunity. Every week the coach guaranteed them that they would play, every week came & went with no field time. When they do get the chance to play they drop the ball, they miss tackles & the coach screams at them to lift their game. But the players self belief has been eroded over the course of his time on the bench, he started to believe that he would never feel the grass under his feet, the elation of crossing the try line, the vision of being carried from the field a victor.
What could have the coach done differently?? What would have been the outcome??
Fundamentally the coach made commitments that he could not keep. He created a strong game plan & set about making it happen. Sometime during the game he altered the plan, but failed to communicate this to the team. The team continued on the original game plan until the coach bellowed his discontent. The players became despondent & began to loose their respect for their coach. How could he do this to us mid match?? Why does he do this??
Does he not have a belief in our ability to win the game??
Commitment & communication are very strong words. When we make a commitment we must do as we say. The strength of the commitment is in the “DOING”. The coach failed the reserves by not committing their game time every week. The coach failed the team by not communicating the change to the game plan. The coach actually disempowered all of his players & reserves by not committing & communicating with intent.
The coach must take “PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY” The coach must be aware of how he is “BEING” The coach must commit with “INTENT” The coach must always be in “THE PRESENT”
Think of this as the game you are playing everyday, not only at work but in all aspects of life. When we take Personal Responsibilities for our actions, amazing things can happen around you & for you. When you empower your staff with Personal Responsibility the same thing will happen. The difference is that they are doing it for themselves & also for the whole team.
A consistent approach is the link that continues to stop teams from ever reaching the goal line. Liken it to the game plan or the coach that decides he only needs to attend training once a week while the rest of the team attend 3 times a week. The team become disillusioned to his plight.
For us at BOSS we see one of our primary roles when working with clients is to act as the assistant coach. We set the Game Plan with the Head Coach & then assist the coach to empower his players with the plan, always mindful that the players will be able to greatly contribute to improving the plan if given the freedom to do so.
So, go back to work & think of what type of game are you playing. Where on the competition ladder do you think you are placed?? How can you win more games?? Do you want to keep playing??
Take your game to the next level or invite BOSS to be on your side, you see you can do anything you want to, the choice of course is yours & yours alone. Enjoy the rest of the conference & thank you for allow us to share some of our experiences with you.
